Daniel C. Stein, Tenor
Tenor Daniel C. Stein, whose voice has been described as “ringing” and “warm and flexible”, begins the 2015-16 season with the Tri-County Master Chorale as soloist for Requiem (Verdi). He then continues with Messiah (Handel) with the Winston-Salem Symphony and Carmina Burana with the Arizona MusicFest.
Mr. Stein began the 2014-15 season performing as tenor soloist for the Portland (ME) Symphony’s performance of Glagolitic Mass (Janacek), a work he repeated making his debut with the Arizona MusicFest. Daniel also returned to the Winston-Salem Symphony where he sang the role of Chevalier de la Force in the opera Dialogues of the Carmelites (Poulenc), a role he then repeated with the Portland Symphony later in the season. He also sang Carmina Burana with the Mansfield (OH) Symphony and Te Deum (Bruckner) with the Florence (SC) Symphony.
He began the 2013-14 season with performances of Messiah (Handel) and excerpts from La Bohème (Puccini) with the Winston-Salem Symphony. He concludes the season with a return to Opera Carolina where he will perform as the Song Vendor in Il Tabarro (Puccini) and as Der Steuermann in Der Fliegende Holländer (Wagner). Opera News said of his performance, "The Steersman of Daniel Stein displayed a warm, attractive tenor of his own and added to the success of the production."
The 2012-13 season opened with Mr. Stein making his debut with Maestro Christopher Warren Green and the Charlotte Symphony as soloist for Mass in C-Minor (Mozart). Additionally, he performed as soloist for Messiah with the Greensboro Oratorio Society, a Faculty Recital at Winthrop University, Cantata No. 4: Christ Lag im Todesbanden (J.S. Bach) with the York County Choral Society and Requiem (Mozart) with The Masterworks Choir of Florence, SC.
He debuted with the Winston-Salem Symphony singing as Aria Soloist in The Passion According to St. John (J.S. Bach) to begin the 2011-12 season. Mr. Stein was seen making debuts with the South Carolina Philharmonic, Greensboro Symphony and with the Gwinnett Symphony in Symphony No. 9 (Beethoven) as well. Closing the season, he performed Carmina Burana as a Guest Artist at High Point University, with the Bay Chamber Concerts (ME), and the Winston-Salem Symphony.
Recently on the concert stage, Mr. Stein has performed such prestigious engagements as his debut at Carnegie Hall as soloist for Elijah (Mendelssohn) with Manhattan Concert Productions. He also performed such works as Magnificat (J.S. Bach), Liebeslieder Walzer (Brahms), The Creation (Haydn), The Lord Nelson Mass (Haydn), and Oratorio de Noël (Saint-Sæns). Additional orchestras and choruses Daniel has performed with include the Mansfield Symphony, Portland Symphony (ME), Dayton Philharmonic, Eastern Music Festival, the Choral Society of Durham, Greensboro Choral Society, Lexington Choral Society (SC), and the Brevard Music Center Festival Orchestra.
Equally at home operatic stage, highlights for Mr. Stein have included Azaël in L’Enfant Prodigue (Debussy) which CVNC.org said his “ringing tenor…as Azaël was outstanding. His warm timbre was especially fine for French and his diction stood out among a cast that was strong on this feature.” He was also seen in the World Premiere of the opera Picnic (L. Larsen), where he created the role of Alan Seymour, as a Guest Artist with UNCG Opera Theatre; Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini) with Opera North (NH), Asheville Lyric Opera, and the Mansfield Symphony; Remendado in Carmen (Bizet) with Opera North; and Alfredo in La Traviata (Verdi) with Capital Opera Raleigh. Other roles include Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi (Puccini), Gerald in Lakmé (Delibes), Sam Polk in Susannah (Floyd), Ferrando in Così fan Tutte (Mozart), and Laurie in Little Women (Adamo). In addition, he has been seen with Opera Carolina, North Carolina Opera, Opera Company of North Carolina, and Greensboro Opera.
A former Principal Young Artist with Opera North (NH) and Resident Artist at Opera Carolina, Daniel completed his Master of Music at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He formerly served on the voice faculties of High Point University in High Point, NC and Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. He currently resides in Columbus, Ohiio with his wife and daughters.
